Service

Full Truckload Freight

When a shipment fills a trailer — or needs the exclusive use of one — full truckload (FTL) service gives it dedicated capacity from pickup to delivery. SENA Logistics coordinates full truckload freight through vetted motor carriers, with one point of contact across the whole move.

The Basics

What full truckload freight means

In full truckload shipping, one shipper's freight occupies the entire trailer. The load travels directly from origin to destination without being consolidated with other shipments or routed through a terminal network.

That direct movement is the practical difference from less-than-truckload (LTL), where multiple shippers share trailer space and freight is handled at hubs along the way. FTL trades a higher minimum cost for fewer touches, tighter timing, and less handling risk.

SENA Logistics is a freight brokerage. We arrange full truckload transportation through qualified, insured motor carriers — we do not own trucks or operate as a motor carrier.

FTL is usually the right fit when

  • Freight is large enough to fill most or all of a trailer
  • You need exclusive use of the trailer — no shared space
  • The load is time-sensitive and can't absorb terminal handling
  • Freight is high-value, fragile, or damage-sensitive
  • The shipment requires specialized equipment
  • You want a direct, non-stop run between two points
Equipment

Matching the trailer to the freight

Equipment choice affects loading, securement, and delivery. These are the trailer types most full truckload shipments fall into.

Dry Van

Enclosed trailer for general freight, palletized goods, and boxed products that need protection from weather.

Flatbed & Step Deck

Open-deck equipment for building materials, machinery, and freight that loads from the side or top.

Refrigerated

Temperature-controlled trailers for food-grade and cold-chain freight requiring consistent conditions.

Questions

Common shipper questions

How much freight do I need before FTL makes sense?

It depends on the commodity and the weight. Many shippers move to full truckload once freight occupies roughly half a trailer or more, or when weight reaches around 10,000 to 15,000 pounds. Below that, LTL is often more economical — but the crossover point varies by lane.

How long does it take to find a carrier?

Timing depends on the lane, the equipment required, and market conditions on the day you ship. Some loads cover quickly; tighter areas or specialized equipment can take longer. Sending complete details lets us start sourcing immediately.

Does SENA Logistics own the trucks?

No. SENA Logistics is a freight brokerage. We arrange transportation through qualified, insured motor carriers. We do not own trucks, employ drivers, or operate as a motor carrier.

Can you handle loads that need special handling?

Tell us what the freight requires — temperature control, securement, liftgate, or other accessorial needs — and we'll look for carriers with the right equipment and experience for that load.

Full truckload or less than truckload?

The right service depends on the shipment in front of you, not on a rule of thumb. This guide sets out what actually differs between the two and gives you a framework for comparing options.
